Disney
announced today that
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, will also be available in 3D when it opens May 4, 2012. The movie wasn’t shot in 3D, so it’ll be going through a 3D conversion between now and May.
In related Marvel news, Disney has moved an untitled Marvel movie from June 27, 2014 to April 4, 2014. Marvel already has a movie set for May 16, 2014 so it’ll be a busy period for superheroes. With both Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 set for 2013 one of these could potentially be the Captain America sequel, or they could be something new such as Ant-Man, Runaways, or Doctor Strange which are all in development.
After teasing us over the past few days 20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus which stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall.
You can watch the trailer below. It definitely has an Alien-vibe to it, and meets the hype that’s been building. Hopefully the actual movie does too.
Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.
20th Century Fox will release Prometheus on June 8th 2012.

Universal Studios UK has announced that Tarsem Singh’s Immortals will be released on DVD and Blu-ray March 5, 2012. The movie was released back in November and followed Theseus (Henry Cavill), a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), who is on a rampage across Greece to obtain a weapon that can destroy humanity.
Immortals received mixed reviews but has given Relativity Media it’s biggest hit so far, with nearly $200 million earned worldwide. Given its $75m budget it can be considered a financial success and gives Cavill some leading man experiences before Man of Steel hits in 2013.
The Blu-ray special features include:
It’s No Myth
Deleted Scenes
Alternate Opening Scene – Young Theseus
Alternate Endings Excerpt from “Immortals: Gods & Heroes” Comic Book

Mission: Impossible series took the international box office by storm (sand storm) with an impressive opening weekend, Puss in Boots continued to perform above expectations while Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows started to slowly roll in theaters around the world.
The latest in the
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opened with an impressive $69.5 million from 42 countries. That’s strangely similar to the $70 million opening Mission: Impossible 3 had five and a half years ago. Now Ghost Protocol was significantly stronger on a per-market base, a very good sign that the movie will most certainly finish ahead of the $263.8 million international cume of Mission: Impossible 3. Past entries in the series were even more lucrative overseas with Mission: Impossible scoring $276.7 million in 1996 while Mission: Impossible 2 made $331 million in 2000. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol still has a long way to go before it can live up to the box office standards set by those predecessors but it’s definitely on the right track.
Also on the right track is former leader Puss in Boots, now in 2nd place with $29.8 million for an international total of $188.2 million and $331.1 million worldwide, more than enough to cover the $130 million production budget.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was significantly healthier overseas then in North America, bringing in $14.6 million from just 6 countries including a $5.9 million start in the UK. The original 2009 Sherlock Holmes nabbed a total of $315 million internationally and that’s the number A Game of Shadows has to beat, even more so now, after that disappointing US opening.
In 4th place was Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, equally disappointing overseas with $13.3 million in 36 countries. Back in 2009 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel opened with $23.4 million from 38 countries so Chipwrecked is slowly turning into the box office dud of this franchise.
5th place probably belongs to Arthur Christmas but it could just as well belong to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. All this mystery comes courtesy of Summit Entertainment and their lack of reported numbers. I could provide an educated guess and say that Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is somewhere between $9 and $10 million, but since Arthur Christmas made $9.5, mystery ensues. Anyway, the Aardman animated flick has made thus far $72.8 million internationally and $112.7 million worldwide. The vampire saga should be somewhere around $660 million worldwide, I’ll update as soon as I get the proper numbers.
Star Trek sequel in May 2013 it was mentioned the movie would be in 3D, giving the assumption Abrams would be shooting his first 3D film. However in a new interview Abrams said he would be shooting in 2D, and converting to 3D during post-production.
When Paramount announced they’d be releasing J.J. Abrams’
“We’re shooting on film, 2D, and then we’ll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good…We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I’m a huge fan.”
I had no complaints about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2‘s 3D conversion so if Star Trek 2 ends up with the same quality conversion (or higher) fans should be happy (unless they’d just prefer to see it in 2D instead).
Shooting on the sequel will begin in January and finish in June. Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho are all returning, along with new additions Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
Carlos actor Edgar Ramirez
is currently the frontrunner to play the villain.
(Hugo) joined the cast of Summit Entertainment’s Ender’s Game adaptation last month we were told Harrison Ford was being sought for the role of Colonel Hyrum Graff. Now Variety reports that Ford’s involvement is confirmed, and he’ll be joined by young Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (Zombieland).

Ender’s Game is an adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 sci-fi novel and is set in Earth’s future, where an imperiled humankind have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien species also known as the “Buggers”). These aliens show an ant-like group behavior, and are very protective of their leader, much like Earth ants protecting their queen.
In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed.
Ford’s character is in charge of the Battle School and while he is often portrayed rather coldly in the book, Graff shows affection for Ender which can be seen at several points throughout the story. Abigail Breslin will play Valentine Wiggin, Ender’s older sister, while Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) will play Petra Arkanianthe who quickly becomes Ender’s ally and trusted right hand.
Summit Entertainment has set a March 15, 2013 release date for Ender’s Game. Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is directing, and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek) are producing.
